Black postcards a memoir5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() 'Whether you're already a fan of Jupp's bumbling bon viveur, or are stumbling across him for the first time, here's a book to savour. As soon as she stopped speaking, I thanked her for being willing to share, broke free from her grasp, panic-bought three punnets of raspberries on the way out and then sprinted back to the Uno as fast as fast can be. Also, her eyes were so extremely wide open that I began to worry that it might be dangerous to let so much light into your head. All I knew was that she was staring so intently at me that I became worried that parts of me would dry up and just drop off like smoked chipotles. ![]() ![]() So intense was her manner that it was extremely difficult to tell if she was scolding or praising me. She seized me by both hands, pulled me towards her, and launched into a passionate monologue that covered a selection of dessert recipes that I had once offered up in print, her difficult relationship with soft cheeses and her husband's irritable skin. 'Are you Damien Trench?' said the lady operating the stall. ![]() Miles Jupp (News Quiz presenter, star of Rev, I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue and The Thick Of It) delves into the mind of his comedy creation Damien Trench - urbane food writer and protagonist of BBC Radio 4's acclaimed sitcom In and Out of the Kitchen. 'Here's a book to savour' - Mail on Sunday 'A gloriously enjoyable read from start to finish' - Daily Express Black Thought has found a way to inspire other Black men, helping them begin their internal healing process with his upcoming memoir, The Upcycled Self. ![]()

Croc by David James5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Spotting the showbiz potential of a musical croc, Hector trains Lyle to perform in a double act, belting out numbers written for the film by La La Land duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. It’s a wackily funny scene: Lyle in his cage singing along to the radio and shaking reptile butt. It begins when Hector finds adorable baby crocodile Lyle in a New York pet shop. Next to his dazzle, everything else about Lyle, Lyle Crocodile, adapted from Bernard Waber’s much-loved picture books, looks a bit average. ![]() But then along comes Javier Bardem with a thinning comb-over and a moustache to rival Hercule Poirot giving another lip-smackingly juicy performance, Bardem marches away with the film as flamboyant failed showman Hector P Valenti. T he star of this family adventure is meant to be an eight-foot CGI singing crocodile called Lyle (voiced by Canadian pop star Shawn Mendes). ![]()

Lovecraft country books5/28/2023 ![]() (NOTE: There may be mild spoilers for Lovecraft Country. There is an overarching narrative at play, but each story stands alone while being wholly entertaining, quite frightening, and extremely poignant. Reading Lovecraft Country is like watching a season of a great show contains elements of serialized and episodic storytelling. In light of the imminent premiere of HBO’s adaptation of the book, it seemed exactly the right time to finally read it. ![]() But I just never got around to reading the book. ![]() In Lovecraft Country’s case, that was prioritizing the stories of Black Americans by placing Black characters as the leads in various genres that have often underserved them. ![]() I love revisionist takes on old genres, especially ones that bring something new to the table. Lovecraft Country was one of those books I always meant to read but never got around to doing so. ![]()

Michael bennett step on a crack5/27/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As in the prior book, Bennett, a widower father of ten adopted children, faces the difficult challenges of his New York City police responsibilities along with the obligations and desires of raising his children. Despite the two year gap in the publication of the two books, the action in the book takes place just a few months later than Step on a Crack. Run For Your Life, the second book to feature New York City detective Michael Bennett is a great follow-up and even better read than Step on a Crack (2007). One last time, he checked the recipient boxes to make sure the address for the New York Times was correct. He shook the Treo out of his damp suit and blooped it on.Īt the bottom of his mission statement, below “Best Wishes,” he typed across the glowing screen: “The Teacher.” “Erica, you finally did one useful thing,” he said softly. That was it-the perfect name he’d been looking for! Things were nice and quiet now, except for the hiss of the cracked radiator and the soft splattering of the lawn pop-ups. He managed to switch off the ignition around the deployed air bag, then squeezed himself out of the seat. Riders of the purple sage zane grey 19125/27/2023 ![]() ![]() Instead, Grey gives the reader scenes like this: "No more did he listen to the rush and roar of the thunderstorm. 2) Or he could write really great prose that makes me have feelings for his characters and tricks me into thinking they are real people. That would be okay if Zane Grey did it in one of two ways. What Lassiter does instead is fall in love. For a gunslinger, there is a distinct lack of shooting people in Lassiter's life. But what does Lassiter do? Does he shoot bad guys in the buttocks? No. This is not only a great start to a Western. Then on the crest of a hill, silhouetted against the setting sun, appears the image of a man and his horse (always disturbing for the bad guys and hopeful for the good guys.) This is Lassiter, a gunslinger of the highest order, and he's here to chew gum and shoot bad guys in the buttocks! And he's nearly out of gum! He's only got like two sticks of Juicy Fruit left. Its opening pages depict a woman being harassed by her Mormon patriarchs for cavorting with Gentiles. ![]() ![]() It has been heralded as a foundation of the Western genre. For one thing, this Riders of the Purple Sage is published by Modern Library. I've been bamboozled! Duped! Hoodwinked! Fraudulated! Deceived! I've fallen victim to tomfoolery! Shenanigans! Monkeyshines! Nefarious antics! ![]()

Flannelled Fool by T.C. Worsley5/27/2023 ![]() ![]() Hahn developed a homophobic pedagogy due to his belief that inside all young males were the latent capacities to either be homosexual or contribute societal value. Findings: Contrary to contemporary accounts, Kurt Hahn was neither a liberal nor modernizing progressive educator, nor was he interested in generalized sexual repression. The paper is informed by critical theory as well as critical approaches to gender, sexuality and pedagogy. ![]() It draws on Hahn's own writings and speeches, coupled with documents from his students and colleagues, educational historians, German historians and historians of both world wars. Design/methodology/approach: This is an historical analysis of sexuality in Kurt Hahn's educational aims and practices. The purpose of this paper is to provide an historical and historicized contextualization of Hahn's hypervigilance on young male sexuality as it pertained to his educational aims. However, the centrality of sexuality in Hahn's educational aims is often misrecognized in contemporary accounts. Purpose: Discourses celebrating Kurt Hahn's practical and intellectual contributions to the field of progressive education are ubiquitous. ![]() |
