The key to da Vinci’s genius as an innovator, as Isaacson presents it, was his “ability to make connections across disciplines-arts and sciences, humanities, and technology” coupled with “an imagination so excitable that it flirted with the edges of fantasy.” Proceeding chronologically through the artist’s life-from his apprenticeship at age 14 in Florence under Andrea del Verrochio to his later years in the court of Ludovico Sforza in Milan and his death in France in 1519-Isaacson shows how da Vinci’s inquisitiveness set him apart from his contemporaries but frequently distracted him from completing commissions or projects. Praising the subject of this illuminating biography as “history’s most creative genius,” Isaacson ( The Innovators) uses observations and insights in the 7,200 extant pages of notes Leonardo da Vinci left behind as interpretive touchstones for assessing the artist’s life and work.

Just think about your character’s backstory, their parents, family and country of birth to give you ideas on how to name your Harry Potter inspired character. Harry Potter names can have origins from English, Irish, Arabic, Indian, Chinese, Japanese and many more nationalities. Take a look at these international names: After all, a student at Hogwarts or a wizard or witch, in general, can come from anywhere in the world. Now, these names sound a little more magical and mysterious compared to everyday names you might know.Īnother thing about Harry Potter names is that they are international. This could be a fantasy surname or a fantasy-inspired first name. If you want to give your characters a little magical touch, try combining normal names, with fantasy-sounding names. In the first instance, you could take inspiration from your own name, or the names of people you know. They sound so normal! And that’s exactly what makes the Harry Potter franchise so relatable to so many readers (or viewers, if watching the movies). These names don’t really stick out as typical fantasy names or even wizard or witch names you might come across. Lily Evans (Gryffindor Student & Harry Potter’s Mother). In most cases, you’ll notice that everyday names you come across (even your own name) could be a great name to use. John graves goodbye to a river5/30/2023 The vicissitudes of the trip, puctuated by the 'passenger' dachshund are great. But the best part of the book, fleeting at times and maddeningly interrupted by various pseudophilosophical diatribes, is just hearing about floating down the river in the capricious time of November in Texas. The subjugation of native Americans is well-portrayed. The book is 'required reading' for anyone interested in a blend of 50's 'progress' in the form of the threatened river and a whole host of tales that, in spite of Graves' conditional idolatry, does not paint a flattering picture of settlers who no doubt loved the land but on their own terms. I'm a 53 year old native of Texas and this work strikes many chords with me.

They should have realized what was going on and put a stop to it. The adults should have been, well.the adults should have been the adults. It should never have come down to a kid like her having to be the one to make people aware of the dangers against the magicas or be forced to save the day. But I also loved how she realized and discussed with herself that this should have been completely handled by the adults. The story is told through Mona's perspective, where she injects wit and humor into everything. I don't think I've ever listened to so many chapters about battle and preparation for battle in a middle grade book as I did in this one. And face the enemy she does - with bread! Who knew bread could have so many uses in battle? With a side-kick named Bob (yeast starter), a gingerbread man familiar, and a newfound belief and understanding of her talents she almost single-handedly helps win a war/battle. It doesn't take long before she learns there is a growing threat that magicas like her are facing in the city-state and while most magical individuals leave (or are killed), Mona soon finds herself in the unenviable position of having to stand-up and fight against the enemy. And although this is considered minor magic, she still gets accused of the murder solely because she is a wizard. It all starts when Mona discovers a dead body in their bakery. The author must have had a blast writing this because it shows.

The black lamb and the grey falcon5/30/2023 In Sturt's notes to his 1845 contribution to Gould's set of specimens, collected at the interior of New South Wales, he commented that the pair were the only individuals to be seen in their seventeen-month exploration of the region. The grey falcon is often seen in family-type groups of an adult pair and usually one (but up to four) first year birds. The only times this bird has been seen in different conditions has been along the Queensland coast during drought years. When they have been occasionally seen outside of these areas, they have been found in similar dry, low altitude, open woodland or grassland. Most sightings of the grey falcon have been within the arid zones, with annual rainfall less than 500 mm. Very few have been seen on the Nullarbor Plain and in the Great Victoria, Gibson and Great Sandy Deserts. It has been sighted over most of mainland Australia except for Cape York. It inhabits Triodia grassland, Acacia shrubland, and lightly timbered arid woodland. The grey falcon is an Australian endemic, usually confined to the arid inland.

The velvet promise by jude deveraux5/30/2023 He spends most of this book torn between last and earthly love, versus ethereal forbidden love, and frankly at times it is insulting that he is unable to get past himself. To me Gavin is the least developed of the Montgomery Brothers, even going further into the series. Jude Devereaux is a master of creating a world, and while some themes and scenes may now be distasteful, in the context of setting and the time it was written this is an excellent book, and a wonderful series. However, this book is one of many withing the Montgomery family, and as such fills in some of the context of other books. Nowadays many of the themes in this book would seem to be shocking and even distasteful. The theme of rape was not uncommon, neither was the hero striking the heroine, both of which are in this book. As a teenager I read a number of the romance novels from the seventies and eighties.

Oryx and crake series5/29/2023 It’s a story about The End of Civilization As We Know It, but the event is coming up very soon – around the year 2050, it seems, from the hints Atwood provides. Oryx and Crake, fortunately, falls closer to the former than the latter. The worst would be a replay of the planet Zycron sections of The Blind Assassin, with their three suns and virgin sacrifices and zorch-ray death guns. The best would be a revisiting of the dystopian darkness she explored in her 1985 masterpiece, The Handmaid’s Tale, a novel that grows more prescient with each passing year. When word got around that Margaret Atwood’s 11th novel was going to be a work of speculative fiction‚ her readers probably hoped for the best but feared the worst.
