The gettysburg address copy5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() The inclusion of Lincoln, who was then busy steering the North through the Civil War, was something of an afterthought: he wasn’t formally invited until a little more than two weeks before the ceremony, and he was asked only to deliver a few remarks at its conclusion. When Everett asked for more time to prepare his address, the event’s date was pushed from late October to November 19. secretary of state who was considered one of greatest orators of his day. ![]() That honor went to Edward Everett, a former Massachusetts senator, governor, Harvard president and U.S. ![]() When organizers planned the ceremonial dedication of a cemetery for the Union dead on the Gettysburg battlefield, they didn’t choose the sitting president as the keynote speaker. Lincoln wasn’t the main act at the Gettysburg consecration. Delivered in the midst of American Civil War at the dedication of a military cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, President Abraham Lincoln's mere two minute-long address invoked the principles of human equality and connected the sacrifices of the Civil War with the desire for “a new birth of freedom.” Much like the orator itself, the speech has gone down as one for the ages. Rhythm of war brandon sanderson5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() In my review of Oathbringer, I said that it gave me the most emotional charged experience I’ve ever had. “Honor is not dead so long as he lives in the heart of men.” That was how utterly, totally, undisputedly incredible Rhythm of War was for me. Bear in mind, I’m talking about a favourite amongst favourites, as I considered all of them masterpieces and the best fantasy books I’ve ever read. That indecision has now ended as Rhythm of War has managed to edge out the rest. This book was STORMING INCREDIBLE!įor seven years since I’ve started reading The Stormlight Archive, I couldn’t decide which title was my favourite, as they were all equally amazing in their own right. Even with my sky-high expectations for this book, Sanderson has surpassed them yet again. ![]() Rhythm of War had me humming to the Rhythm of Awe. Beyond this horizon by robert a heinlein5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() I could escape my fears, vulnerability, and self-doubts simply by turning that fertile “Dial of Destiny” on our new television set, inviting me to a gentle path along a beloved “Yellow Brick Road.” It was there, and only there, that I might, perhaps, find release from the bonds and fleeting ignorance of childhood, and fly away upon wings of fancy to “Never Never Land.”Īs the newborn light within its circular dome flickered hesitantly to life, I found myself riding my valiant stallion across the Western plains alongside saddle pals like Hop-A-Long Cassidy, Roy Rogers, John Wayne, and Bob Steele. While my physical world was confined to emotional conflict, and the youthful constraints of intellectual subservience, a magical little box called television opened up limitless vistas of travel, exploration, and journeys to the stars. By Steve Vertlieb: I was a lonely, introverted, deeply sensitive little boy with a fertile imagination as big and as vast as the sea. The 1950’s opened the door for me to a magical kingdom, overflowing with wonders that fed my appetite, enticing my yearning heart with the promise of worlds, oceans, and a dimensional universe of both dreams and promise. ![]()

A Wrinkle in Time by Hope Larson5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() This lady, who is old enough to know better, is being petty and mean. ![]() Jiro Taniguchi’s adaptation of Jack London and Humayoun Ibrahim’s adaptation of Jack Vance are two examples-both do a good job of pacing story for the medium and using storytelling tools unique to comics in order to bring the reader into a special experience of an already existing story. Successful transfers of literature into the comics medium are exceedingly rare. Even works backed by incredible, no-fail talents like Eric Shanower and Skottie Young can falter and produce books that are merely enjoyable. Mediocre creators produce dreadful (though sometimes hilarious) works, like Marvel’s recent attempt to bring Pride & Prejudice to the medium and the recent re-interpretation of Dostoyevsky, The Grand Inquisitor. It’s not an easy task and the very nature of the transition is positioned as a serious obstacle to the success of any adaptation. Unless an adapter is wildly liberal in the work of adaptation, comics have exactly two things to work with: writing (provided largely by the original author) and art through which to carry forth the dialogical and narrative aspects of the work (respectively). It’s not like with movies where a charismatic star or a sublime musical score can provide lift for a work. ![]() Adaptations from literature into the comics form have it pretty rough. ![]()

Watchmen novel5/28/2023 ![]() Just be forewarned, there are two versions of the trade paperback floating around. It's cheap and it's readily available, and that's all most readers need to hear. This collection has been in print more or less constantly since DC first collected the series in the late '80s. Method 2 – The Trade Paperback It's safe to say the majority of Watchmen readers experienced the story through the standard trade paperback format. ![]() ![]() In short, unless the hunt is half the fun for you, don't bother trying to collect the individual issues. DC won't be reprinting the subsequent 11 issues, though, so don't go thinking completing your collection will be that easy. This is a nice method of experiencing the first chapter in its original format. Aside from nicer printing quality, the reprint will be very similar to the original. That said, in January, DC will be reprinting issue #1 at the original cover price of $1.50. Particularly if you want your copies in good condition, purchasing the original issues will be by far the most expensive method of reading Watchmen. Given its popularity, it should come as no surprise that a full run of the original Watchmen issues can set you back a fair amount of green. ![]() DC released Watchmen as a 12-issue maxi-series from 1986 to 1987. Part 1 – Reading the Watchmen Method 1 – The Single Issues Like most graphic novels, Watchmen was originally published as a series of issues before moving to the trade paperback format. ![]()

Drive book daniel pink5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Mastery is engaging in deliberate practice with a worthy pursuit.High performance requires personal autonomy over task, time, team, and technique.Intrinsic motivation relies on autonomy, mastery, and purpose.Traditional if-then rewards can work for rule-based routine tasks, but they’re ineffective and counter-productive for non-routine, creative knowledge work.Instead, the work poised to take off in tomorrow’s economy-characterized by non-routine and creative activities-can only flourish when people are given autonomy to pursue mastery with a clear purpose of contributing to something larger than ourselves. Daniel Pink argues that most businesses have failed to upgrade their ineffective “carrot-and-stick” motivators. Drive is about understanding human psychology and the forces of motivation in the 21st-century economy. ![]()
